Ceasefire Broken Within Hours as Pakistan Initiates ; China’s Pro-Pakistan Remarks Draw Scrutiny

New Delhi/Islamabad/Beijing – The fragile ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan appeared to unravel within hours on Saturday as Pakistan reportedly violated the truce with cross-border shelling in Jammu and Kashmir. The breach triggered a swift response from Indian forces and reignited tensions along the Line of Control.

The escalation came just a day after both nations publicly agreed to halt hostilities following high-level diplomatic efforts, with support from the United States.

However, what has drawn further attention in diplomatic circles is Beijing’s statement that appeared to implicitly back Islamabad’s position. In a press briefing on Sunday, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated support for Pakistan’s “efforts to safeguard regional stability and national sovereignty,” a comment widely interpreted as a veiled endorsement of Pakistan’s stance in the Kashmir dispute.

Analysts say the timing of China’s remarks—coinciding with Pakistan’s ceasefire breach—has raised eyebrows in New Delhi and beyond. “This is not a coincidence. Beijing is signaling where its loyalties lie, and it’s not with the broader call for peace,” said a senior Indian official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has yet to issue an official statement on China’s comments, but sources indicate that diplomatic backchannels are already engaged to address what is being seen as a provocative stand by Beijing at a delicate moment.

Meanwhile, Indian security forces remain on high alert, with Operation Sindoor continuing along sensitive sectors of the border. Military officials have confirmed that retaliatory measures were “measured yet firm,” aimed at preventing further escalation.

As regional dynamics grow more complex, observers warn that a single spark—whether military or diplomatic—could undermine the fragile peace and stall efforts toward a longer-term resolution.
